                                                                                 A FEW FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT THE HOSPITAL
 
  •  It's the biggest single site hospital development in Europe.
  •  It's the first new acute hospital to be built in Birmingham for 70 years.
  • There is capacity for 1,213 beds - about the same as Selly Oak and the old QE hospitals combined.
  • 44% of the beds are in single rooms, and the rest in 4-bedded rooms.
  • All the rooms have en-suite facilities.
  • Each main ward has 36 beds.
  • There are sinks at the entrances to each ward to aid hand hygiene.
  • It has 32 operating theatres.
  • It has a 100-bed critical care unit - the largest in the world.
  • There are 3,800 car parking spaces.
  • There are separate lifts for patients, visitors and supplies to ease the flow of people around the hospital.
  • It has a large research centre run by the University of Birmingham Medical School.
  • The total building cost of the new hospital is £545 million.
  • The new hospital is a third more energy efficient than the Selly Oak and old QE hospitals combined.
  • Up to 25% of all heat energy in the building is recycled.
  • The air conditioning system can suck in and pump out enough air to fill an olympic swimming pool every 5 seconds.
  • More than 10,000 tons of steel have been used to build the new hospital - that is equivalent to the weight of 83 blue whales.
  • Approximately 225,000 cubic metres of ground have been excavated to build the hospital - thats enough to fill 90 olympic sized swimming pools.
  • About 55,000 metres of concrete foundation piles have been bored into the ground, which is 35 miles - or roughly the distance from Birmingham to Worcester.
  • The new hospital has 65,000 square metres of vertical wall cladding - equivalent to 2 Canary Wharf towers.
  • It has 40 miles of service piping - equivalent to the distance from Birmingham to Derby.
  • A range of 182,407 units of equipment have been bought, ranging from soap dispensers to high - tech imaging equipment.
  • It has 10,000 doors.

This is a very big hospital and can be quite daunting at first, the sheer size of the building takes you back. However, receptionists are always at hand to ask directions, and especially Hospital Volunteer wayfinders are always happy to direct you to the necessary departments, and will always take you there if required.

If you are arriving by train to University Station, the hospital  is about 5 mins walk to the main entrance, please note: The CDU unit(clinical decision unit)  and the Accident and Emergency are ONLY accessed via Mindleson Way, no access can be gained to these units from the main entrance.
